Mukteshwar Travel Guide: Things to Do & Himalayan Views
Perched at about 2,170 metres, Mukteshwar is a quiet hill town in the Nainital district known for its apple and apricot orchards, fragrant pine and deodar forests, and uninterrupted views of the high Himalayan ranges. It sits noticeably higher than Nainital and is far less crowded, which is exactly its charm. Travellers who want clean mountain air, dark night skies and a slower pace tend to fall for Mukteshwar quickly, and many return year after year.
The temple and the cliffs
The town takes its name from the centuries-old Mukteshwar Dham, a Shiva temple sitting on the highest point and reached by a short flight of steps. Just below it are the dramatic Chauli Ki Jali rock cliffs, a sheer escarpment with natural rock formations, a small holed rock that pilgrims pass through, and sweeping views down into the valley. This is also the main spot in town for rappelling and rock climbing, with operators offering safe, guided sessions in season.
Things to do
Mukteshwar rewards slow travel, but there is plenty to keep more active visitors busy across a day or two.
- Himalayan viewpoint for sunrise over Nanda Devi and Trishul on clear mornings.
- Adventure activities at Chauli Ki Jali, including rappelling, rock climbing and zip-lining.
- Orchard visits to apple, plum and apricot farms, especially rewarding around harvest time.
- IVRI campus, the historic Indian Veterinary Research Institute, with handsome colonial-era stone buildings and a small museum.
- Forest walks and birdwatching through quiet oak and deodar woods around the town.
Where the views are best
The Himalayan panorama is the headline attraction here, and Mukteshwar delivers it generously. The clearest views come early on autumn and winter mornings, when peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nanda Kot and the Panchachuli group line the horizon in a long snow wall. Many homestays and resorts have been built specifically to catch this view, so you can often watch the sunrise unfold from your balcony with a cup of tea in hand. Sunsets from the temple ridge are equally lovely.
Best time to visit
April to June offers warm days and orchard blossoms, while October to February brings the crispest mountain views, occasional snowfall and exceptionally clean air. The monsoon turns everything a vivid green and is beautiful, though driving the final hill stretch can be slow and misty. Pack warm layers whatever the season, because nights are cold even in the height of summer.
How to reach
Mukteshwar is roughly 50 km from Haldwani and about 70 km from Nainital, reached via Bhowali and Ramgarh. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam, around 50 km away, and the nearest airport is Pant Nagar. The final stretch is a scenic, winding climb through fruit-growing villages with views opening up as you gain height.
