Offbeat Places Near Nainital You Should Visit
Nainital is wonderful, but in peak season the crowds and traffic can take some of the shine off a hill holiday. The good news is that within an hour or two of town there are quiet villages, birding forests and viewpoints that most tourists never reach. If you have already seen the lake and Mall Road, or you simply prefer your hills on the peaceful side, these are our favourite offbeat escapes near Nainital, all easily reached by road.
For birdwatchers and forest lovers
The forests just above and around Nainital are a paradise for birds and unhurried walkers, with cool shade and barely another soul in sight.
- Pangot, about 15 km from Nainital, a renowned birding village with over 250 recorded species and serene oak and rhododendron forests.
- Kilbury, a quiet forest rest house area on the road to Pangot, perfect for a slow, scenic drive and a picnic.
- Sattal forests, far less commercial than Bhimtal, excellent for birds, butterflies and gentle trails.
Quiet villages and viewpoints
For Himalayan views without the bustle of the main towns, head to these lesser-known spots where homestays still outnumber hotels.
- Ramgarh, the fruit bowl of Kumaon, with apple and peach orchards and a quiet literary history.
- Mukteshwar's outlying villages such as Sitla and Satkhol, full of homestays with uninterrupted snow-peak views.
- Kakrighat, a tranquil riverside spot on the Kosi associated with Neem Karoli Baba and ideal for meditation.
- Khurpatal, a quiet emerald lake away from the main tourist circuit.
Heritage and nature stops
A few more unusual stops reward the curious traveller who likes to dig a little deeper.
- Naukuchiatal's far shore, much quieter than the boating jetty and a good launch point for paragliding.
- Kainchi Dham on a non-festival weekday, when the ashram is peaceful and deeply atmospheric.
- Bhimtal's Folk Culture Museum, for a quiet glimpse into traditional Kumaoni life and crafts.
Best time to visit
These offbeat spots are best from March to June for pleasant weather and again from September to November for clear views and active birdlife. The monsoon makes the forests beautifully lush but the roads slower, so plan extra travel time and check conditions. Carry water, snacks and warm layers, as facilities in these smaller places are limited and shops can be few and far between.
How to reach
Most of these places lie within 15 to 60 km of Nainital and around 30 to 70 km from Haldwani, with Kathgodam as the common railhead. Because public transport to these hamlets is sparse and infrequent, a private vehicle is by far the easiest and most comfortable way to explore them properly over a day or two without being tied to bus timings.
A practical tip: pair two or three nearby spots into a single loop, such as Pangot with Kilbury, or Ramgarh with the Mukteshwar villages, to make the most of the winding hill roads and minimise backtracking.
