Kausani: Sunrise, Tea Gardens & Things to Do
Kausani is a small ridge-top village in the Bageshwar district, perched at about 1,890 metres and famous for one of the widest Himalayan panoramas in all of Uttarakhand. Mahatma Gandhi was so taken with the view during a stay here that he called it the Switzerland of India, and the sight of the snow peaks turning gold at dawn is the single biggest reason travellers make the journey up. For a tiny village, Kausani delivers an outsized payoff.
The famous sunrise
Kausani's headline attraction is its roughly 300 kilometre sweep of Himalayan peaks, including Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Panchachuli, laid out along the horizon. On a clear morning the snow line catches the first light and glows orange and pink before settling into brilliant white. Most hotels and homestays in the village are deliberately oriented towards the range, so you can watch the whole spectacle from your balcony with a hot cup of tea.
Tea gardens
The slopes just below the village hold the well-known Kausani tea estate, where you can walk through the neatly terraced gardens, learn how the leaves are processed, and buy fresh Kumaon tea to take home. The lush green terraces set against the white peaks make this one of the most photographed spots in the region, especially in the soft morning light.
Things to do
Beyond the view and the tea, Kausani has a handful of genuinely worthwhile stops.
- Anasakti Ashram, where Gandhi stayed and wrote part of his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita.
- Sumitranandan Pant Museum, honouring the celebrated Hindi poet who was born here.
- Baijnath Temple, a 12th-century stone temple complex on the banks of the Gomti river, about 17 km away.
- Rudradhari Falls and caves, reached by a short and pretty forest walk from the village.
- Tea factory tour and shopping for local honey, woollens and shawls.
Best time to visit
For the clearest mountain views, visit from March to June or September to November. Winter brings the sharpest, most dramatic views but very cold nights and occasional snow. During the monsoon, clouds often hide the peaks for days, though the valley turns gloriously green and the air is wonderfully fresh. Carry warm layers regardless of season, because mornings are chilly even in summer at this altitude.
How to reach
Kausani is about 120 km from Haldwani and roughly 50 km beyond Almora. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam, around 115 km away, and the nearest airport is Pant Nagar. The drive takes around four hours through Almora and Someshwar, climbing steadily to the ridge with views opening up near the top.
- Choose a hotel facing the Himalayas so you can enjoy the sunrise straight from your room.
- Combine Kausani with Baijnath and Bageshwar in one easy loop.
- Try to reach by evening so you do not miss the next morning's sunrise.
