Gangotri & Yamunotri Yatra Guide: Route, Trek & Best Time
Gangotri and Yamunotri are the two western shrines of the Char Dham and the revered sources of the sacred Ganga and Yamuna rivers. Located in Uttarkashi district, they are usually done together as the first half of the Char Dham circuit, but they also make a fulfilling Do Dham pilgrimage on their own. Of the four Dhams these two lie closest together, so a focused trip is very manageable. Here is how to plan this twin yatra from Haldwani.
How to Reach
From Haldwani, drive via Rishikesh and Dehradun to Barkot, the base for Yamunotri. After Yamunotri darshan, continue to Uttarkashi, the base for Gangotri. The road journey from Haldwani to Barkot takes around 10-11 hours, so an overnight halt is strongly recommended to break the long drive and start the Yamunotri trek refreshed.
Yamunotri Darshan
The road ends at Janki Chatti, from where a steep 6 km trek leads up to the Yamunotri temple. The climb is short but demanding, and several features make it memorable:
- Surya Kund: A hot water spring where rice and potatoes are cooked and offered as prasad.
- Divya Shila: A revered rock pillar worshipped before entering the temple.
- Pony, palki and pithoo are available for those who cannot manage the trek on foot.
Gangotri Darshan
Gangotri is far easier to reach; the road runs very close to the temple, with only a short walk to the shrine beside the Bhagirathi river. Devout and well-prepared trekkers may also visit Gaumukh, the actual glacier snout that is the source of the Ganga, about 18 km further, but this requires a forest permit and good fitness and is a separate multi-day undertaking. The temple town itself is calm and scenic, and many pilgrims like to spend an evening by the river before returning to Uttarkashi. The Submerged Shivling rock, visible in the riverbed when water levels drop, is another revered sight here.
Best Time & Opening Dates
Both shrines open on Akshaya Tritiya, around late April or early May, and close around Diwali. May-June and September-October are the most pleasant months. The monsoon period of July-August brings landslide risk on the Uttarkashi roads, so plan buffer days if travelling then.
Tips
- Carry your Char Dham registration and a valid photo ID.
- Pack a raincoat, woollens and sturdy shoes for the Yamunotri climb.
- Start the Yamunotri trek early to beat the afternoon crowd and changing weather.
- Keep cash handy, as ATMs and mobile network are limited in the upper reaches.
- Allow a buffer day in the monsoon months for possible road blocks near Uttarkashi.
Barkot and Uttarkashi both offer comfortable guesthouses and dharamshalas for overnight halts, and starting each day's drive early helps you make the most of the safer morning road hours. This twin Dham is a beautiful, achievable pilgrimage on its own or as the opening stretch of the full Char Dham.
