Purnagiri Temple (Tanakpur): Darshan & Travel Guide

Purnagiri Temple, dedicated to Maa Purnagiri, is one of the most revered Shakti shrines in the Kumaon region and a Siddha Peeth of great faith. Perched on the Annapurna hill near Tanakpur in Champawat district, overlooking the Kali river and the plains stretching towards Nepal, it draws lakhs of devotees each year, especially during the grand spring fair. For pilgrims from the Haldwani belt it is one of the most accessible major temples, making it a popular weekend or one to two day trip. Devotees believe the goddess fulfils heartfelt wishes, and the hilltop setting above the meeting of river and plain gives the darshan a powerful, uplifting feel. Here is how to plan your visit.

How to Reach

From Haldwani, the temple is roughly 90-100 km via Khatima and Tanakpur, an easy drive of about 3 hours on largely good roads. From Tanakpur you continue around 20 km towards Thuligad and the Bhairav Mandir, the base of the climb. The final stretch is a hill road, after which the last leg up to the shrine is on foot.

The Climb & Darshan

  • From the parking area near Tunyas, a trek of about 3 km leads up to the main temple.
  • Ponies and palki are available for elderly pilgrims and those who cannot climb.
  • Pilgrims traditionally first pay respects at the Bhairav temple below before ascending to Maa Purnagiri.
  • The hilltop offers sweeping views of the Sharda, or Kali, river meeting the wide plains, with Nepal visible across the border on a clear day.
  • Small shops along the trail sell prasad, water and snacks, so you need not carry everything yourself.

Best Time to Visit

Purnagiri can be visited almost year round, but the most auspicious and crowded period is the Chaitra Navratri fair in March-April, when huge numbers of devotees gather and the hill comes alive. October-November, just after the monsoon, is also very pleasant with clear weather. Avoid the heavy monsoon weeks, as the hill road and the foot trail can turn slippery and risky.

Darshan Tips

  • Start early in the day to finish the climb before the midday heat or the largest crowds.
  • Carry water, light snacks and comfortable footwear for the walk up.
  • Respect the queue discipline and temple customs, especially during fair season.
  • Keep a close eye on children near the steep sections of the path.
  • Dress modestly and carry a small offering if you wish to perform puja at the shrine.

Simple food stalls and basic guesthouses are available around Tanakpur and near the base for those staying overnight, though many visitors from Haldwani complete the darshan comfortably in a single full day. Purnagiri is an easy and rewarding trip from Haldwani and can be combined with nearby Tanakpur, the Boom Dam barrage and the scenic Kali river belt along the Nepal border.
