Char Dham Yatra by Car from Haldwani: Complete Guide & Itinerary
The Char Dham Yatra covers four sacred Himalayan shrines of Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Starting from Haldwani gives you an easy launch into the Kumaon and Garhwal hills, and travelling by car lets you set your own pace through the mountains rather than rushing to catch shared transport. Over many seasons of running this circuit for families, elderly pilgrims and large groups, we have learned that good planning, sensible halts and an experienced driver matter just as much as faith. Here is how we organise a complete yatra for our guests.
How to Reach & The Route
From Haldwani the classic clockwise circuit runs to Rishikesh, then Barkot for Yamunotri, on to Uttarkashi for Gangotri, across to Guptkashi or Sonprayag for Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath via Joshimath, returning through Rudraprayag and Rishikesh. The pilgrimage traditionally begins at Yamunotri and ends at Badrinath. Each Dham has a different level of access:
- Yamunotri: Drive to Janki Chatti, then a 6 km trek; pony, palki and pithoo are available.
- Gangotri: The road reaches close to the temple, so very little walking is needed.
- Kedarnath: Drive to Sonprayag or Gaurikund, then a 16 km trek or helicopter.
- Badrinath: Motorable right up to the temple, easy for elderly pilgrims.
Day-wise Itinerary (10-11 Days)
This relaxed plan keeps daily driving reasonable and leaves room for rest and weather buffers, which the mountains often demand.
- Day 1: Haldwani to Barkot via Rishikesh and Dehradun.
- Day 2: Yamunotri darshan from Janki Chatti, back to Barkot.
- Day 3: Barkot to Uttarkashi.
- Day 4: Gangotri darshan, return to Uttarkashi.
- Day 5: Uttarkashi to Guptkashi or Sonprayag.
- Day 6-7: Kedarnath trek, darshan and return.
- Day 8: Drive to Badrinath via Joshimath.
- Day 9: Badrinath darshan, Mana village, drive to Rudraprayag.
- Day 10-11: Return to Haldwani via Rishikesh.
Best Time & Opening Dates
The shrines open around late April or early May, on Akshaya Tritiya for Yamunotri and Gangotri, with Kedarnath and Badrinath following within the same week. They close around Diwali in late October or November. May-June and September-October are the most comfortable months for weather and views. July-August brings heavy monsoon and landslide risk, so we advise caution and extra buffer days during the rains.
Registration & Packing Tips
Char Dham registration is mandatory and checked at multiple points. Carry the registration QR, valid photo ID and warm woollens even in summer, as nights at altitude are cold.
- Acclimatise slowly; the altitude rises sharply near Kedarnath and Badrinath.
- Keep a light rucksack for the Kedarnath and Yamunotri treks.
- Carry essential medicines, a torch, raincoat and cash, as network is patchy.
- Book ponies and palki only through authorised counters.
An experienced driver who knows these ghat roads, the one-way regulation points and the right halts makes all the difference to a long yatra.
