Badrinath Temple Travel Guide: Route, Darshan & Tips

Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is one of the holiest of the Char Dham and Chota Char Dham shrines. Set at about 3,300 metres in the Chamoli district beside the Alaknanda river, the brightly painted temple is framed by the towering Neelkanth peak. For many travellers the best part is that, unlike Kedarnath or Yamunotri, the road reaches right up to the temple, making Badrinath one of the more accessible high Himalayan shrines for families and elderly pilgrims alike.

How to Reach

From Haldwani the route runs via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Chamoli and Joshimath before the final climb to Badrinath. It is a long but deeply scenic drive of about 12 hours along the Alaknanda valley, so most pilgrims break the journey at Joshimath or Pipalkoti. Near Joshimath there is a checkpoint where, on the narrow stretch ahead, traffic has in earlier years been regulated in a one-way system, so keep a little buffer time in your plan.

Darshan & Things to See

  • Tapt Kund: A natural hot spring below the temple where pilgrims traditionally bathe before darshan.
  • Badrinath Temple: The main shrine of Badri Vishal; arrive early in the morning to avoid the longest queues.
  • Mana Village: The last village near the Indo-Tibet border, famous for Vyas Gufa, Bheem Pul and the Saraswati river.
  • Charanpaduka and Vasudhara Falls: Short excursions for the fit and willing, with fine valley views.
  • Neelkanth viewpoint: The pyramid-shaped peak behind the temple glows golden at sunrise, a sight worth waking early for.

For accommodation, Badrinath has a wide choice of dharamshalas, GMVN rest houses and hotels, many within walking distance of the temple, though rooms fill quickly in peak season so it is wise to book ahead. Pilgrims who prefer to avoid the cold high-altitude night often stay instead at Joshimath or Pipalkoti, which are warmer and well connected, and visit Badrinath as a day trip.

Best Time & Opening Dates

Badrinath opens around late April or early May and closes around mid-November, with the closing date announced on Vijaya Dashami. May-June and September-October offer the best weather and clearest views of Neelkanth. The temple sees very heavy footfall on opening day and through the peak season, so plan your halts and darshan timing accordingly to avoid long waits.

Tips for Pilgrims

  • Carry the mandatory Char Dham registration and a valid ID, both checked en route.
  • Pack warm clothing; even summer nights are cold at this altitude.
  • Keep buffer time for traffic regulation near Joshimath.
  • Drink water and rest if you feel breathless soon after arrival.
  • Respect temple customs and photography rules inside the complex.
  • Try to attend the early-morning abhishek or the evening aarti for a more peaceful darshan.

Badrinath pairs beautifully with Kedarnath as a Do Dham trip or forms the rewarding final leg of the full Char Dham circuit.
