Haldwani to Pithoragarh by Taxi: Route, Distance & Travel Guide
Pithoragarh, often called Little Kashmir for its lovely soup-bowl valley, is a district headquarters town set close to the Nepal border. It is a popular base for travelers heading onward to Munsiyari, Dharchula or the Kailash Mansarovar route, and a destination in its own right for those who like quieter hill towns. We run regular trips here from Haldwani throughout the year.
Distance, Time & Route
Haldwani to Pithoragarh is about 210 km and takes roughly 6 to 7 hours. The scenic route runs Haldwani → Bhowali → Almora → Panar → Gangolihat → Pithoragarh. There is also a slightly different alignment via Seraghat, and our driver chooses the better road on the day based on current conditions and any roadwork. The drive past Almora through pine ridges is genuinely beautiful.
Places to Explore
Pithoragarh and its surroundings offer plenty:
- Pithoragarh Fort (London Fort) overlooking the town
- Chandak Hill for Himalayan and valley views
- Gangolihat and the Patal Bhuvaneshwar caves en route, a remarkable underground limestone shrine
- Dhwaj Temple for a short trek and panoramic scenery
Best Vehicle Choice
A Sedan can manage this route in good weather, but for the hill curves beyond Almora most of our guests prefer an SUV or Innova Crysta for comfort and stability on the climbs. Families and groups also book the Tempo Traveller, which handles the Almora to Pithoragarh road well with our experienced drivers. We keep all vehicles serviced for hill duty so you ride with peace of mind.
Local Tips
Almora makes a good lunch and tea halt at roughly the halfway mark, and it is famous for bal mithai and singauri sweets worth trying. The roads are generally well maintained, but during monsoon there can be occasional landslides near Gangolihat, so confirm conditions with us first. If Pithoragarh is your stepping stone to Munsiyari or Dharchula, mention it when booking so we plan fuel stops and timing properly. Carry valid government ID for all passengers, as you are travelling close to the international border area where checks can occur. Pithoragarh also makes a comfortable overnight halt if you are continuing deeper into the Kumaon Himalaya, and the town has decent hotels and good local food. Soft, wide views of the valley at dawn from Chandak are worth waking up early for. We are happy to plan a multi-day Kumaon circuit combining Pithoragarh with Munsiyari or Patal Bhuvaneshwar. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for this drive, with clear roads and lovely weather, while the monsoon needs a little caution near Gangolihat. Whatever the season, our drivers stay in touch with us about road conditions, so your journey is planned with the latest information and you travel with confidence.
