Haldwani to Almora Taxi: Fare, Distance, Route & Travel Time

Almora is the cultural heart of Kumaon, a crescent-shaped ridge town known for its old bazaars, temples, distinctive carved wooden houses and sweeping Himalayan views. From Haldwani it is a classic hill drive, and as a local operator we run it for both pilgrims and leisure travellers heading deeper into the mountains.

Distance & Travel Time

Haldwani to Almora is approximately 85–95 km, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours. It is a continuous hill road after Bhowali, so the time depends on traffic, weather and how many photo stops you want along the way. We never rush this drive; the curves reward a steady pace and the scenery is worth a few stops. Many of our regular guests treat the journey itself as part of the holiday, pausing at a roadside tea stall to take in the valley before carrying on.

Route & Road Conditions

The route goes Haldwani – Kathgodam – Bhowali – Kainchi Dham – Almora. The surface is generally good, with steady curves and some lovely viewpoints over pine-clad valleys. The stretch past Kainchi Dham can slow down on weekends due to ashram crowds, so we time the drive to avoid the worst of it where possible.

  • The road is fairly well-maintained but narrow in patches; an experienced hill driver matters.
  • You pass Kainchi Dham on the way, so many travellers add a quick darshan.
  • Carry warm layers in winter; Almora sits higher and gets quite cold in the evenings.
  • Mornings give the sharpest views of the snow line before the afternoon haze sets in.

Best Time to Visit & Things to See

Almora is pleasant almost year-round. Summers (April–June) are ideal for escaping the plains heat, while autumn and winter bring crystal-clear Himalayan panoramas. Don't miss the Kasar Devi temple on its famous ridge, the historic Mall Road and Lal Bazaar, the Chitai Golu Devata temple where devotees tie bells and letters, the Nanda Devi temple, and the local Bal Mithai sweet shops. Almora also makes a great base for Jageshwar, Binsar and Kausani.

Taxi Fare & Booking

We recommend a Sedan for couples, and an SUV or Innova Crysta for families wanting comfort on the long curving climb. Groups of nine or more travel well in our Tempo Traveller. Many guests book a multi-day package using Almora as a base to reach Binsar, Jageshwar and Kausani, with the cab and driver available throughout. We quote a transparent fare based on vehicle and itinerary, with nothing hidden and the driver and standard charges all clarified before you confirm.
